Cambodia “Killing Fields” and orphans
When one thinks of Cambodia, two visuals may come to mind: “Killing Fields” and orphans! From 1975 – 79, “Killing Fields” dictator Pol Pot terrorised his nation, brutally uprooting, torturing and slaughtering a couple million of his fellow citizens. The deep impact from this living nightmare is still evident in the psyche of Cambodia some 30 years later, remnants of a living nightmare that personally touched every single Cambodian family.
Both of our FCF Partners here work with orphans and street kids in different capacities. At one orphanage we went to, I met about 60 orphans, and two little girls (7 and 8 years old) held my hand and would hug me whenever the opportunity would arise during the time I was there. They were so precious and when it was time to drive away, asked to come home with me!
Thank God all these kids are now receiving an education, learning English, and have their basic needs met, and so have a future. For details on sponsoring these dear kids, see: http://familycare.org/network/a04.htm
Another interesting experience at the orphanages was meeting and interacting with Singaporean teen-agers (14 and 15 year-olds) , and their teachers, who were part of the volunteer program that our partner coordinates. It is very impressive how Singapore encourages their young people to travel to surrounding countries to help the less fortunate. And in doing so, form solid character and morals during their formlative years.
