There's a difference between charity and philanthropy.
"In general," said Mary Jalonick, president and chief executive of the Dallas Foundation, "charity deals with direct giving, what people need this minute. It satisfies their immediate needs.
"Philanthropy is more strategic: how to address core problems for the long term, not the short term."
Otherwise stated, philanthropy is the monetized expression of a community’s commitment to its future.
